Project Overview:

This downtown Main Street project involved two adjacent historic buildings, each requiring a distinct preservation approach:

The corner building retained its original exterior walls and structural envelope, but the interior had deteriorated beyond repair. The entire interior was demolished down to the basement level, then completely reconstructed from the ground up. This approach preserved the building’s historic street presence while creating a safe, functional interior structure that meets modern building codes.

The second building presented a different challenge. After careful assessment, it was determined that the structure could not be safely salvaged due to extensive damage and deterioration. Rather than attempt a compromised restoration, the building was demolished and replaced with a new structure designed to reflect the architectural character of the original time period. This sensitive infill construction maintains the visual continuity of the historic streetscape while providing a sound, code-compliant building.

Together, these two approaches—adaptive reconstruction and historically sympathetic new construction—preserved the architectural integrity of this important downtown block.
